GRADUATE COURSES
Division of Anatomy & Cell Biology

The Anatomy & Cell Biology Graduate Program aims for flexibility so that the individual needs and background of each student can be accommodated. Courses are selected with advice from the student's research supervisor and Supervisory Committee, although both Master's and Doctoral candidates are expected to enrol each year in ANAT 550. Other courses may include those offered not only by the Division of Anatomy & Cell Biology but also by other Departments and Graduate Programs at UBC. These include, but are not limited to, courses offered by the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Mathematics, Medical Genetics, Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Psychiatry, Psychology, Surgery and Zoology, and the Graduate Programs in Cell Biology, Genetics and Neuroscience (see Documents, Forms & Links). Note that not all courses are offered each year and that permission of the Course Director or Department Head, in addition to permission from the student's Supervisory Committee, may be required.

1. Graduate level courses currently offered by the Division of Anatomy & Cell Biology include:

ANAT 504. Cell Structure and Function. (3) Seminar discussions of topics in developmental cell biology.

ANAT 511. Fundamentals of Body Design: Basic Principles in Human Anatomy. (3) Introduction to general principles in the design of the human body. This course involves a detailed dissection of the back and core body regions, including thorax, abdomen and pelvis; the study of selected prosections of other regions of the body; and analysis of clinical cases. This knowledge will form a foundation for studying all other areas of the body in related courses.

ANAT 512. Functional Human Anatomy of Head and Neck Systems. (3) This course involves a detailed study of head and neck systems through dissection of the head and neck, the study of selected prosections, and the analysis of clinical cases.

ANAT 514. Functional Human Anatomy of the Urogenital Systems: Pelvis and Perineum. (3) This course involves a detailed study of the urinary and reproductive systems through dissection of the pelvis and perineum, the study of selected prosections, and the analysis of clinical cases.

ANAT 515. Functional Human Anatomy of the Musculoskeletal Systems: Back, Limbs and Joints. (3) This course involves a detailed study of the functional anatomy of the human musculoskeletal system through dissection of the back, limbs and joints, the study of selected prosections, and the analysis of clinical cases.

ANAT 516. Functional Human Neuroanatomy: Central Nervous System. (3) This course involves a detailed study of the brain and spinal cord through dissection, the study of selected prosections, radiographs and MRIs, and the analysis of clinical cases.

ANAT 517. Functional Human Microscopic Anatomy: Basic Tissues, Organs and Systems. (3) This course involves a detailed study of the microscopic anatomy of basic tissues, organs and systems through the study of slides of human tissue and of light and electron micrographs, the analysis of clinical cases, and the discussion of the implications of structural alterations.

ANAT 527. Muscle Biophysics. (3) Selected topics in muscle contraction at an advanced level.

ANAT 548. Directed Studies in Anatomy. (2-6)

ANAT 550. Current Topics in the Morphological Sciences. (3) Seminars and discussions on selected and current topics in cell, developmental and neurobiology.

ANAT 590. Introduction to Functional Human Anatomy. (6) Introduction to microscopic and gross human anatomy. Students will take ANAT390 and ANAT391, which will include the microscopic anatomy of organ system development, structure and function; neuroanatomy; and a survey of gross anatomy. In addition, students undertake advanced study of one area of functional human anatomy. Prerequisites: BIOL101/102 or equivalent.
