Dr. Sydney Friedman (55 years, since 1950)
Sydney came to UBC from McGill, where he obtained his MD and PhD degrees in the 1940's, after serving in WWII. He founded the Department of Anatomy and was a charter (founding) member of the Faculty of Medicine when it started in 1950. Since that time, he has been an outstanding teacher, researcher, and scholar, the author of a 3-volume text/atlas 'visual anatomy' for medical students, as well as hundreds of scientific publications on effects of sodium on vascular hypertension. The department, under his direction for 30 years, became one of the finest in North America. He touched the lives of generations of medical and dental students at UBC, and mentored many trainees, faculty members, department heads, and two former deans. He has been a major figure on campus, in the Medical Faculty, and in anatomy in Canada and North America. |
Ms. Roseanne McIndoe (39 years, since 1966)
Roseanne began her career at UBC in 1966 in the Department of Surgery with Dr. Holubitsky and then Dr. Turnbull. In 1974, she joined the Department of Anatomy in Dr. Sydney Friedman’s lab as a technician. She then worked with Drs. Palaty, Bressler and Ovalle before becoming the departmental administrator in 1996. Roseanne has contributed to the foundation of the department as a devoted and committed employee. She has been hardworking and selfless, as well as the consummate volunteer (e.g. United Way). |
